In national news,
The Annual Special Olympics are being held this weekend in South Carolina. With over 1,200 athletes diagnosed mainly with intellectual disabilities participated in sports, such as bowling, basketball, power lifting and disc golf. The Special Olympics organization is thrilled to have more athletes compete every year. What is even more thrilling is the amount of volunteers that come out and help make the event such a big success. The organization has affiliates worldwide and over 21,000 athletes compete in all different regions around the world.
Now to see what’s happening in sports,
College basketball has been heating up in the wake of March madness. Last night Mississippi State Defeated South Carolina 60-58, with this victory Mississippi State now moves on in the tournament with their championship hopes still alive.
Now for the weather,
Today will be partly sunny with some clouds in the area. Temperatures will range from 50 as the high and 30 as our low. The next few days will be cool with a chance of rain on Monday.
In international news,
Yesterday at Port Royal International Airport a single engine plane over shot the runway and crashed into a busy highway. No one was seriously injured and the pilot was rushed to the hospital and is listed as in stable condition. The Jamaican authorities are looking into what could have caused the accident but no lead shave been found. The airport was shutdown for nearly three hours after the crash leaving many passengers stranded. The airport reopened later that afternoon and flights resumed.
In entertainment news,
The troubled Broadway play “Spider-man” has been having more issues over the past week with safety violations. The play has been plagued with many problems since it has opened and now has steep fines to pay due to its poor safety conditions. It was reported that the U.S Department of labor issued a 12,000 fine to the play organization for the precautions that were not taken in order to assure the safety of the cast and crew.
Now for local news,
A Middletown man died late last night in a car crash. Around 2 am last night a 24 year old man drove off the road and plowed into several trees. When authorities arrived they pronounced him dead at the scene. Police speculate that drugs and alcohol were not involved but will be clarified later in the police report.
