Today is March 5^th 2011 here is today’s top headlines.

In national news,

The Annual Special Olympics are being held this weekend in South Carolina. With over 1,200 athletes diagnosed mainly with intellectual disabilities participated in sports, such as bowling, basketball, power lifting and disc golf. The Special Olympics organization is thrilled to have more athletes compete every year. What is even more thrilling is the amount of volunteers that come out and help make the event such a big success. The organization has affiliates worldwide and over 21,000 athletes compete in all different regions around the world.

Now to see what’s happening in sports,

College basketball has been heating up in the wake of March madness. Last night Mississippi State Defeated South Carolina 60-58, with this victory Mississippi State now moves on in the tournament with their championship hopes still alive.

Now for the weather,

Today will be partly sunny with some clouds in the area. Temperatures will range from 50 as the high and 30 as our low. The next few days will be cool with a chance of rain on Monday.

In international news,

Yesterday at Port Royal International Airport a single engine plane over shot the runway and crashed into a busy highway. No one was seriously injured and the pilot was rushed to the hospital and is listed as in stable condition. The Jamaican authorities are looking into what could have caused the accident but no lead shave been found. The airport was shutdown for nearly three hours after the crash leaving many passengers stranded. The airport reopened later that afternoon and flights resumed.

In entertainment news,

The troubled Broadway play “Spider-man” has been having more issues over the past week with safety violations. The play has been plagued with many problems since it has opened and now has steep fines to pay due to its poor safety conditions. It was reported that the U.S Department of labor issued a 12,000 fine to the play organization for the precautions that were not taken in order to assure the safety of the cast and crew.

Now for local news,

A Middletown man died late last night in a car crash. Around 2 am last night a 24 year old man drove off the road and plowed into several trees. When authorities arrived they pronounced him dead at the scene. Police speculate that drugs and alcohol were not involved but will be clarified later in the police report.

When a High school Student thinks of what they will do when they graduate most choose the option of going to college to further their education. When it comes to actually going to college and taking the classes many students realize that it’s not what they expected.

For students at Kean University many don’t make it to their sophomore year. So why are there so many students that choose to leave Kean before they graduate? I tracked down a former Kean student to find out more.

The high cost of education and the tough economic times make it harder and harder for everyone wishing to achieve a degree seems almost impossible. With no answers in sight many are choosing to forget about college all together.

Along with the cost of education the job market is also not what it was a decade ago. Less than half of students who graduate from Kean University find employment when they get out into the job market and are still working part time retail jobs or serving table to make ends meet.

Along with all these problems for students costs are still climbing and there seems to be no end in sight.

When many people think of the New Jersey shore they think of beautiful beaches, hot summer days and relaxation. This has been true for many beach towns along the Jersey coast except for the town of Asbury Park.

Since the early 1990’s Asbury Park has gone from one of the biggest points of interest for the Jersey shore to a run down ghost town that shows no signs of life.

For the past decade the beach town of Asbury Park has been experiencing a resurgence of life and development in order to bring the town to it’s booming economy that it has not experienced since the 1970’s.

Local business owners talk about life in the town over the past fifteen years

GUEST 1- I used to walk outside my bar and see nothing but rundown buildings and an empty boardwalk. Over the past ten years or so there has been a lot of development such as housing and new businesses. Its nice to see that the town can be what it was when I first moved here.

Walking down the boardwalk you can see the building of what used to be the Asbury skate park, which is in talks to reopen in order to draw the younger crowd that has been lacking for many years.

GUEST 1- it’s nice to see that younger people are starting to show up once again. Now that the crime rate has dropped people aren’t afraid to let their kids come out and have a good time without any worries.

One reason for the recent boom is the residential aspect of the town. Many areas that used to be vacant lots or run down buildings are turning into affordable housing that is attraction younger adults ranging from 23 to 35 years of age. One new resident talks about why they moved to Asbury.

GUEST 2- I moved into Asbury from Middletown about a year ago. I’ve met a lot of interesting people and there’s always something to do on the weekends whether it be going to the Asbury Lanes or the Saint. I’m very happy here there is not much to complain about.

Now that Asbury Park is beginning to come back to life many people wish to bring back the Music festivals that brought many tourists to the area.

Guest 1- within the next ten years or so I hope that this town becomes the New Orleans of the Northeast

            For music lovers there is not much going on as far as live performances in the New Jersey area. Luckily, for the past two years Formatic clothing company hosts many events that host to local artistic talent. One such event passed this Sunday as formatic clothing hosted a clothing drive to go along with the release of their spring line. 

 

These events have had amazing success in the past and according to a formatic clothing representative this one is no different.

 

Guest 1: It’s been a great success so far, we’re halfway through the night and we have a huge pile of clothes, probably a few hundred pounds of clothing all going to the Salvation Army tomorrow. I think it’s going to take 4 or 5 cars to transport it.

 

Along with the clothing drive several local bands from the area were booked in order to draw out a good crowd, to gain as many donations a possible.  Such local bands consisted of Chocolate Bread and the Static Jacks. 

 

Guest 2:  Not only do you get to see some great music and see all your friends in one place, but it’s all for a good cause.

 

With such success of these charitable events they become bigger and bigger and keep helping those in the local communities who are less fortunate than others. Those who had no cloths to give still found a way to help.

 

Guest 1: We have a lot of canned food too, so it’s good to see that a local music event can also help out a lot of people in need.
